Our friends at the Japanese sex toy company Tenga, which aims to revolutionize sexual pleasure, are giving away 2 VIP tickets (including complimentary drinks) for CSD Berlin & 5 Pride-themed masturbation toys for men. Email info@daddy.land to take part in the competition. Good luck! XOXO

If you’re happy and you know it, wank away [clap clap]

If you’re happy and you know it, wank away [clap clap]

If you’re happy and you know it,

And you really want to show it … wank away

My love affair with Pride celebrations started as a sweet sixteen teenager living in west London suburbia, feeling sad that I didn’t have any gay friends or anyone relatable in my poor existence. I remember hearing on the radio about preparations for gay Pride that afternoon in central London. I didn’t think twice about going – I just had to fabricate a convincing lie in case I bumped into anyone.

I’ll never forgot when I got off at Charing Cross station and saw an endless sea of gay men, women, and trans people across Trafalgar Square. My eyes were beaming with ‘GAY MEN’ ‘GAY MEN’ ‘FINALLY I’M SEEING GAY MEN’.

It didn’t take long before I ended up having my first kiss with a random guy called Gustavo who led me astray to an alleyway in Soho where (from what I can remember) we did a lot of kissing and some touchy touchy (also known as masturbating in public). Nobody cared. That’s the beauty of Pride – all is possible. I remember thinking ‘finally, I’ve found a home on planet earth. There is room for people like me’.

A lot has happened since 2000. Anti-gay laws across Europe have been replaced with equality ones and gay marriage has become the gold standard for any country which wants to call itself liberal (finally Deutschland!). I, on the other hand, have become muscly, druggy, richer and masturbated a lot more men, but my enthusiasm for Pride has not waned. CSD has become my local Pride since I moved to Berlin in 2009 and it never fails me. I’m always overwhelmed by all the possible scenarios, turn of events such a beautiful day can offer. Many criticise it for being too corporate and not political enough. For me there’s no bigger political statement than seeing thousands of LGBTQI individuals together being themselves.

For many years, this has been my CSD anthem:

If you’re happy and you know it, wank away [clap clap]

If you’re happy and you know it, wank away [clap clap]

If you’re happy and you know it,

And you really want to show it … wank away

The story behind this is that I caught my ex-boyfriend wanking secretly the morning before CSD, so for years I would torture him with my shitty version of this nursery rhyme. On reflection, this sums up Pride well. Despite the cynicism around CSD, there’s always a childlike enthusiasm – we want it to be bigger and better every year. We want it to be more accommodating for all to show everyone that we are proud and free of who we are and the sex we have. Let’s never miss this opportunity to celebrate freedom.

Happy CSD <3
